WANT TO PROCESS APPLICANTS WITH LIVESCAN BACKGROUND CHECK FOR YOUR STAFF, VOLUNTEER, OR CONTRACTOR? Then this section is for you. Traditional criminal history background checks
are conducted by using the individual's demographics such as name, gender, date
of birth, etc. as the basis of the search. While some demographics are unique
enough to produce accurate results, many others will contain false criminal
history. As result, many of the results are often ignored assuming to be
inaccurate or in some cases, extensive amount of research are conducted on
verification. The simplest way to eliminate this fundamental problem is to
utilize fingerprint based searches in place of demographic based searches.
Fingerprints are extremely accurate utilized by law enforcement and proven to
work for the past 100 years.
Historically, fingerprint searches are performed by first taking impressions of
the individual's fingers on an 8" X 8" fingerprint card, and then fingerprint
cards are classified and searched against file bins manually. With the
introduction of Automated Fingerprint Identification Systems (AFIS) a little
over 30 years ago such searches and matching became the jobs of computers with
human as the final judge. To accomplish these searches, the fingerprint card is
scanned into computers using flatbed scanners and searches are performed
subsequently. This process used to take as long as 60 to 180 days due to backlog
of this labor intensive process. As technology improved came the introduction of
LiveScan fingerprinting technology. LiveScan systems are capable of capturing
fingerprints in great detail and able to process and package the data, then
transmit directly into AFIS bypassing the labor intensive manual scanning
process, hence improved the search response time to hours or just a few days.
Today, LiveScan is the most common method of capturing fingerprints for
background check purposes.
BUY VS. OUTSOURCE There are a series of questions you may want to ask
yourself before deciding on whether to purchase your own LiveScan to perform
background checks. We have outlined a few simple questions with answers that can
help to steer you towards a decision. We hope you will find this helpful:
1. Are you mandated to perform fingerprint based background check by legal
statutes? If so, you are a candidate.
2. Are you concerned that if the individual leaves your office, then they will
never carry out this essential activity? If so, you are a candidate.
3. How many people do you need to process per year? If over 120, you are a
candidate.
4. Do you have the necessary staff to process people internally? Even though, it
can take as short as 2 to 3 minutes to process an individual, you should budget
10 minutes per person. In other words, if you process 10 people per month, do
you have a little less than 2 hours of labor free time? If this formula
calculation works out, then you are a candidate.
5. Do you have the necessary budget? In general, for "budgeting" purposes, a
complete LiveScan system costs between $9,000 to $15,000 with an annual spending
of somewhere around $1,000 to $3,000.
6. Physical space... Don't worry about it. Today's LiveScan units are extremely
compact, the smallest scanner hardware is 6"W X 6"D X 5"H and weighs only 4lbs,
when coupled with a laptop, it does not take up much space. However, a 35" HIGH
surface is highly recommended since it will put the scanner surface closer to
ideal height (while standing).
